In April, 2018 using the constitutional changes strong armed by his Republican Party, then President Serzh Sargsyan was elected Prime Minister of Armenia giving him a de-facto third term as head of state. As a result, a popular uprising led by Parliament member Nikol Pashinyan swept the country in the form of general strikes and peaceful civil disobedience calling for a new government to be formed.
